BRIEF HISTORY

Text Box: Hindu Rao Hospital
Historical and Archeological Significance

The present day modern Hindu Rao Hospital the largest hospital under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is situated on a picturesque hilltop. Initially the building which houses a part of Hindu Rao Hospital was constructed as a private residence by Sir Edward Cole Brook who was a British Resident. In 1830 it was taken over by Sir William. The Maratha chief Shri Hindu Rao Ghatake purchased the property in 1835. After the demise of Shri Hindu Rao the house was converted into a small nursing home -primarily for recuperation- and was named after him It has evolved to its present form from a 16 bedded small nursing home started in 1911 meant primarily for recuperation. In 1951 Delhi State Govt. converted this Nursing Home into a General hospital offering basic preventive and curative OPD services with 127 beds for in-patients. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi took over the hospital in 1958 and the Ministry of Health, Govt of India, designated this hospital as a referral hospital in 1963.

Hindu Rao Hospital still has many archeologically important components that are well maintained. The original building, which now houses the Departments of ENT, Ophthalmology and an Operation theatre, is protected building under the ASI act. There are other buildings too –including Peer Grah Sahib–and a “Baoli” - a water body. Legend has it that a tunnel that started from the building led till the Yamuna river. The doorway to the said tunnel has been boarded up since a few years and only the romantic legend remains.

The Nursing Home of Hindu Rao Hospital has 48 well furnished rooms. It meets the needs of the patients and provides comfort at a reasonable cost.  It comprises of four floors. Each floor has 12 rooms, 6 air-conditioned and 6 air-cooled. Each room has a separate pantry, toilet and a balcony. There are seven rooms on the first floor reserved as non-paying rooms The basement houses the administrative block of NH, store rooms, electricity control room, a lecture theatre, holistic health counseling cum OPD room and a relaxation therapy room.

Patients from the entire specialty are admitted in nursing home by their unit heads. NH is well equipped with its staff round the clock and has emergency facilities for the patient. Apart from best medical care provided by our consultants, the aim of the place is to provide Holistic Health to our patients i.e. healing the mind through positive thinking. Unique holistic medicine is practiced in nursing home thereby giving not only physical relief to the patients but simultaneously also taking care of the psychosomatic factors. Daily room to room rounds are made and patients are taught to help heal themselves by positive thinking and relaxation techniques. Encouraging results are seen in Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Repeated angina, Tuberculosis, any type of chronic ailments, multiple fractures, major surgeries, IUGR, PIH, and Sterility and practically in almost all types of cases. Also counselling and preparation of the preoperative patients is done to reduce the incidences of preoperative anxiety induced hypertensions and other complications; this minimizes the unnecessary delay in major surgeries.

The rooms in the Nursing Home are very economical and comparable to any other Govt. setup, no visiting fees is charged by the doctors, lab, x- ray, ECG, USG, and CT Scan facilities are at very economical rate and are available round the clock.
